"Yet here I am, quite happy..."

Macklin's Journal - November 20, 1915

... Tonight Hussey has been playing his banjo, and I sat in his tent a while enjoying the music. I could not help comparing my position here with my position at home. Had anyone told me a few years ago that I should b e sitting in a tent on an ice floe, hundreds of miles from land and thousands from civilization, in heavy self-patched boots and self-darned socks. both soaking wet, in untidy trousers with a face unwashed for over 4 weeks, grimy hands and nails, in a position from which one would be lucky to escape alive - I would have laughed in his face. Yet here I am, quite happy, enjoying my food as never before, though every bit of it - including tea, etc. - is taken from the same pannikin, and that we are short of salt, sugar, etc. and are totally without such everyday stuffs as butter etc. Although we are getting plenty of food I am always hungry, and look forward to every meal with zest. My only grief lies in the possible anxiety of those at home, and I try as a rule not to think of them.
